REQUIREMENTS:
Classroom Notebook (for storing handouts) and Ten Audio Rated, Blank Compact Disc Recordable Media (CDR). Students will be responsible for all work regardless of computer failures such as corrupted discs. Always make a backup.


COLLEGE GOAL:
The Louisiana Tech University School of the Performing Arts provides comprehensive training in the fields of music, theatre, dance, and arts management which connect the broad spectrum of historical and contemporary issues related to art and craft; and in promoting the relationship between theory and practice, prepares professionals and teachers for leadership in national and international culture and art for the twenty-first century.


The purposes of the Department of Theatre are to educate and train artists of the theatre and to provide for its students a foundation of professionalism and dedication to their art within a climate of diversity, discovery, and risk.


COURSE GOAL:
Students will learn the basic aspects of sound design for the theatre by applying techniques in sound creation and manipulation and analog/digital recording. Students will also gain a basic understanding of new audio technologies useful for creating sound designs for the theatre.


GRADING POLICY:

Students will be responsible for completing original sound designs. Each student will present his or her sound design(s) to the class. Class time will be allotted for completion of the designs. Some projects will require work outside of class.


You will receive a total of 500 points. Four projects will each be worth 100 points, and attendance/classroom participation will be worth 100 points.


You should make every effort to be present at each class period. In case of illness, the instructor must be notified at least one hour before class in order to be excused. Any other absence must be discussed at least 24 hours in advance. Each absence will result in the lowering of your total score by 20 points. The class follows the schedule below.


Week 1
Sound Basics, Editing with Digital Performer

Week 2-3
Project 1- Sound Designing for Video
The student is provided with a two-minute video clip, with audio track removed. The student will create stereo audio to complement the video.

Week 4-5
Project 2- Sound System Setup

The student will participate in the construction of a basic stereo public address system. Topics of discussion will include, monitoring, effects loops, multiple speaker control, amplification, etc.

Project 3- Boom Box Surround Sound
Students will create a surround environment by engineering two stereo compact discs to be played in tandem using conventional stereo equipment.

Week 6
Project 3 continued/Paper Work Discussion

Weeks 7-10
Project 4- Major Sound Design Project
Each student will provide sound design for opening scene of Like Totally Weird by William Mastrosimone. This play opens with the sound track for a movie scene.


Class time will be allotted for completion of the designs. Some projects will require work outside of class.


SUBMISSIONS:
Each student will present his or her sound design(s) to the class. Each completed sound design must be submitted upon completion as a 192 kbs, stereo, mp3. These may be provided on compact disc, emailed, or submitted via our building’s local network. Your assignments are graded using a rubric, available for download at the Speech 414 website.


GRADING SCALE:
450-500 points-A, 400-449 points-B, 350-399 points-C300-349 points-D, < 300 points-F


Students needing special testing accommodations or classroom accommodations are encouraged to discuss the need with the professor as soon as possible.
