The Music Education program at Louisiana Tech University is nested
within the College of Education and nurtured by
the School of the Performing Arts in the
College of Liberal Arts.
Interested students may pursue a Bachelor of Music
Education (BME) degree (in Instrumental or Vocal Music) or
a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a cognate in Music
(Instrumental or Vocal Music Specialty).
The Bachelor of Music Education degree prepares students to
teach music in grades K - 12. The BME (Vocal) provides
students with a specialty in vocal music (re: choir). The
BME (Instrumental) provides students with a speciality in
instrumental music (re: band, or orchestra). Students
completing the BME degree will also be certified to teach
elementary music. Students completing this degree are
prepared to enter graduate schools towards the pursuant of
a Masters degree in Music with a concentration in Music
Education.
The Master of Arts in Teaching degree (with a cognate in
Music) prepares students with an undergraduate music degree
(not in education) to teach music in grades K - 12.
The BME or MAT in music degrees are for students who wish
to teach Music in Grades K - 12.
The BME and MAT in music degree programs at Louisiana Tech University are
accredited by the National Council for Accreditation
of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Association of
Schools of Music (NASM).
