In the Spring of 2003, the School of the Performing Arts, including Theatre and Music, was identified by the Unversity of Louisiana Board of Regents as "a unique area of excellence" along with the School of Art, School of Literature and Language, and the Department of Journalism. SInce that advent of that designation the Department of Theatre has continued its' pursuit of excellence. With a faculty of working professionals the Department of Theatre challenges students for excellence in academia and beyond. The University Theatre within Louisiana Tech's School of the Performing Arts holds a eighty-five year tradition of excellence. Since its inception, the University Theatre has provided quality education for the Tech student. In addition to the academic mission of the organization, the theatre has provided the campus and North Louisiana with entertaining and enriching productions. Since 1920, a regular season of plays has been produced without interruption. Each year the University Theatre produces a minimum of three to four main stage productions and regularly scheduled laboratory productions. Last year, six student-directed productions were mounted in addition to numerous performances for parties and club meetings, participation in the American College Theatre Festival activities, and special events like "The Tech Tonies," a gala awards event with entertainment. In addition, an opera workshop is presented on campus. This season is no exception to that rule. The 2005-2006 Season is a year dedicated to the playwright and original work. All mainsatge shows this year are world premiers! In its efforts to expose the student to the finest in professional theatre, the School of Performing Arts sponsors professional touring companies and serves as host to world class artists. Visit our School of the Performing Arts guests page for more information. The University Theatre has been active in the American College Theatre Festival since its inception. Students often place as finalists in the Irene Ryan Acting Award Competition, the various new play competitions, and in the design competitions. In 1990, a play by a Tech theatre major won the national first prize in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts New Musical Award for his contemporary musical about the student riots for freedom in Hungary in 1956. THEATRE AT TECH MEANS EXCITEMENT AND EXCELLENCE!
