Welcome to the Music Department

The Music Department at Louisiana Tech University provides our students with a variety of opportunities for performance and preparation for careers in music. Our faculty members are recognized for their commitment to developing the talent of the student. Music degrees that we offer include the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Music in performance/pedagogy, and the Bachelor of Music Education.


Students desiring to major in music will select one performing area as a major from the following: piano, strings, voice, guitar, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, organ, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. All music curricula in the School of the Performing Arts are accredited by the National Association of Schools Music.

Statement of School of the Performing Arts Mission:

The Louisiana Tech University School of the Performing Arts provides comprehensive training in the fields of music, theatre, dance, and arts management, which connects the broad spectrum of historical and contemporary issues related to arts in product and process. It promotes the relationship between theory and practice, prepares professionals and teachers for leadership in national and international culture and art for the twenty-first century.

A. DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC MISSION, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES

Department of Music Mission Statement:
The mission of the Department of Music is to provide the highest level of musical training in a comprehensive program that prepares students for careers in conducting, music education, music industry, music performance, and theory/composition. The department encourages and supports creative and intellectual contributions by faculty, fostering an environment that promotes teaching by example. The Department of Music serves Louisiana Tech University, the North Louisiana community and the state of Louisiana by offering a variety of cultural benefits through music performances and workshops, and by providing regional and national leadership for the music profession. The department is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Teaching Objectives:
As we engage in scholarly teaching to prepare undergraduate students for careers in performance, music education, composition, and music industry, our objectives are as follows:

  • 1. To attract and retain high-quality undergraduate music students by
    • a. promoting Department of Music activities through individual faculty efforts and contacts
    • b. maintaining high visibility throughout the state and region through ensemble activities, student and faculty participation in professional organizations, and student involvement in regional and national competitions
    • c. providing the availability of quality performance venues for recitals and ensemble
      performances
    • d. providing well-maintained professional-quality specialty instruments for students' use while participating in large and small ensembles
    • e. assuring quality accompanists for voice lessons, ensemble rehearsals, recitals and other varied performances
    • f. assuring adequate availability of practice spaces
    • g. fostering and maintaining relationships with Department of Music alumni
    • h. increasing the availability of scholarship moneys
    • I. providing effective career advisement
  • 2. To prepare students to enter the highly diverse and competitive music market by
    • a. providing broad and extensive performance opportunities, including multiple and varied large ensemble opportunities, multiple and varied chamber ensemble opportunities, multiple and varied solo opportunities, multiple and varied theatre/opera opportunities
    • b. exposing students to current trends and developments in music through performances, master classes and workshops by Department of Music faculty, guest artists and researchers
    • c. faculty involvement in professional organizations, such as Music Educators National Conference, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Music Teachers National Association
  • 3. To seek continual improvement in education by
    • a. engaging in ongoing assessment and evaluation of programs
    • b. maintaining contact and seeking input from alumni
    • c. reviewing and improving curriculum on an annual basis

  • Creative/intellectual Contributions Objectives:
    In the area of Creative/intellectual Contributions, our objectives are as follows:
  • 1. To present and interpret music on a local, regional, and national level through
    • a. solo recitals
    • b. soloing with ensembles
    • c. participating in chamber and large ensemble performances
    • d. conducting large and small ensemble performances
    • e. performing in opera and music theatre productions
  • 2. To disseminate results of research findings through presentations at regional, national, and international conferences, and through publication in academic, educational, and practitioner journals and books
  • 3. To contribute to the artistic community through the creation of new works by
    • a. performing compositions by Department of Music faculty
    • b. commissioning new works from outside the Department of Music
  • 4. To contribute to the music profession by reviewing music and papers for music journals and books.

  • Service Objectives:
    In the area of service, our objectives are as follows:
  • 1. To participate in and serve as leaders in national/international professional music organizations
  • 2. To build and maintain an active artistic environment in the university and multi-parish region, and to enhance the cultural life of the State of Louisiana
  • 3. To participate in and serve as leaders for college and university committees, boards, councils and centers.
