Welcome to the School of the Performing Arts

The School of the Performing Arts: "A Unique Area of Excellence"

A Message from Dr. Kenneth Robbins, Director, SPA

Along with the School of Art and the creative writing programs of English and Journalism, the School of the Performing Arts has been designated by the University and the Board of Regents as "a unique area of excellence in the creative and performing arts," one of only five programs of study so identified at Louisiana Tech University.  We in the school are honored by this designation and are determined to not only continue our dedication to excellence but make improvements.

To what do we owe this distinction? There are many contributing factors:
  • the students who select Tech as their academic home
  • the faculty who are engaged in providing the best possible education
  • the facilities that continue to provide excellent venues for performances
  • the curriculum that is aimed at providing students with the best possible education

We within the School are proud of our alumni; visit our website and click on the "Alumni" button in order to be introduced to our graduates who continue to have an impact on the arts of their regions.

Take a few moments to peruse our website where you will find answers to your questions.  We welcome you to visit us at your convenience.  Auditions for performance scholarships can be arranged with appropriate notice.  We look forward to meeting you.

=====

Louisiana Tech University School of the Performing Arts is an integral part of the academic, artistic, and social experience of the Tech campus. Our goals are to provide a cultural resource for Louisiana Tech, Ruston, and the surrounding communities of North Louisiana, as well as educational opportunities in the performing arts for major and non-major students.

The school encompasses the academic areas of music and theatre, and includes the Marching Band of Pride, Concert Bands, the Jazz Ensemble, the University Theatre, Opera Workshop, Music Stage Productions, University Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, University Chamber Orchestra, the Louisiana Tech Concert Association (LTCA), and a variety of chamber ensembles and student organizations.

Facilities for the School of the Performing Arts include the Band Building and the Howard Center for the Performing Arts. The Band Building houses the University Bands and faculty in the wind and percussion areas. Howard Center houses the office of the School of the Performing Arts, and an 1100 seat auditorium complete with a full pipe organ, the Arthur W. Stone Theatre, a 64 seat recital hall, a choral rehearsal hall, dressing rooms, and the offices and studios for the faculty in the choral, guitar, organ, piano, theory, voice, and theatre areas.

All performing activities are coordinated by Dr. Kenneth Robbins, Director of the School of the Performing Arts. Information is available in Room 203 of Howard Center for the Performing Arts. (Phone 318-257-2711)

Financial Aid is available in the form of scholarships, work-study programs, service awards, and graduate assistantships. These are in addition to financial assistance offered through the University.
