2005-2006

Laura Ulrich, mezzo-soprano; Doug Donley, flute; and Rick Thomson, bass clarinet will perform We vainly wrestle... (Robert Frost) & Death is a Dialogue... (Emily Dickinson), and I will play Pop Music on April 13, 2006 at the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium concert in Ruston, LA.


 

On Sunday, April 2, 2005 I will perform a faculty recital with Dr. Randy Sorensen, Dr. Steele Moegle and Mr. McCoy Ransom.  Works on the concert include: Eric Ewazen's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, Joe L. Alexander's Pop Music, Franz Strauss' Nocturno, op. 7  (arranged by Joe L. Alexander), Walter Ross' Villanella, Arthur Frackenpohl's Sonata for Trumpet, Tuba and Piano.  The concert will be at 3 pm in Howard Auditorium on the campus of Louisiana Tech University.  Admission is free.

Dr. Randy Sorensen and I performed Modal Suite at the 2006 Southeastern Composers’ League Forum which was held at Converse College (Spartanburg, SC) on March 18, 2006.

Nicholas Wood performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) on the student recital hour on November 2, 2005 at Louisiana Tech University.

Joi Chadwick and Leroy Hawthorne III performed Dorian Folksong and Nicholas Wood performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) at Louisiana Tech Univerisity’s Octubafest on October 30, 2005.

Nicholas Wood performed my Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) in a theory classroom demonstration on October 28, 2005 at Louisiana Tech University.

Dr. Kenyon Wilson performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) six times on his guest artist tour of  October 2-7, 2005.  He played at Labanon, IL, McKendree College; Columbia, MO, University of Missouri-Columbia; Pittsburg, KS, Pittsburg State University; Norman, OK, The University of Oklahoma; Fayetteville, AR, University of Arkansas; and  Conway, AR, University of Central Arkansas.  The tour was sponcered by Willson Instruments and DEG Music Products.

Dr. Randy Sorensen and I performed Modal Suite and Dialog #2 for trumpet and tuba at the Treen Auditorium at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, LA on the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium Concert #21 on September 20, 2005.

2004-2005

Herbert Waldner, Tubist of the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany performed Infamy... on June 3, 2005 in Stuttgart, Germany at the Stuttgarter Künstlerbund.

Dr. Jeff Parker and I performed Three Duet for Euphonium & Tuba and Two 20th Century Duets for euphonium and tuba on May 6, 2005 at the Phi Mu Alpha recital at Louisiana Tech University.

I performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) at the SAI’s Café Roses on April 21, 2005 at Louisiana Tech University.

Dr. Jeff Parker and I performed Three Duet for Euphonium & Tuba and Two 20th Century Duets for euphonium and tuba on Bach’s Lunch on April 6, 2005 at the Presbyterian Church of Ruston (Louisiana).

Dr. Alan Goldspiel performed the world premiere of Soundscapes (guitar and sound file) on the Louisiana Tech University’s Liberal Arts Research Symposium on April 21, 2005 in Wyly Auditorium.

Tracy Bedgood performed Tragic Suite at the 2005 Southeastern Composer League Forum held at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA on March 11, 2005.

The University of Kansas Tuba-Euphonium Consort performed Playtime (tuba/euphonium quartet) on November 15, 2004 at the Swarthout Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Kansas.

2003-2004

The Louisiana Tech Chamber Orchestra performed Flight of Sorrow (symphonic orchestra) on May 16, 2004 on their spring concert held at Louisiana Tech University.

The Low Brass Ensemble performed Playtime on Ruston’s concert of the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium on May 7, 2004.  Other pieces played included Two Bryant Songs: November &  Song (These Prairies Glow with Flowers) with Dr. Jeff Parker (voice), Mandy Hooter (clarinet), and Mary Jo Parker (piano); and Affinities Remembered (flute, oboe and clarinet) performed by Amy Grifka (flute), Amanda Love (oboe) and Amanda Hooter (clarinet).

Leroy Hawthorne III played Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) (unaccompanied tuba) on the May 5, 2004 student recital hour.

On May 1, 2004, Casey Conway (trombone) and Carl Michels (tuba) performed Two 20th Century Duets for  Euphonium & Tuba and the Low Brass Ensemble performed Playtime (tuba/euphonium quartet) at the Piney Hills Art Festival in Ruston, Louisiana.

On Saturday, April 24, 2004, Affinities Remembered (flute, oboe and Bb clarinet) was performed at a joint concert of the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium and the Mid-South Chapter of NACUSA at LSU's School of Music.  The performers include Amy Grifka, flute; Amanda Love, oboe; and Amanda Hooter, clarinet with the composer conducting.  In addition, Sonare Praeludium (Tuba/Euphonium Quartet), was performed by Bradley Boone and Richard Demy, euphoniums and Dr. Joseph Skillen (Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at LSU) and Ed Vinson, tubas.

On April 20, 2004, Dr. Alan Goldspiel and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs performed Petite Suite for Two (clarinet and guitar) on their faculty recital held at the Presbyterian Church of Ruston.

I performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) (unaccompanied tuba) at the Mid-South Chapter of NACUSA concert.  The concert was held at the Baton Rouge Gallery on April 4, 2004.

On March 26, 2004, Dr. Alan Goldspiel and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs performed Petite Suite for Two (clarinet and guitar) at the Southeastern Composers’ League Meeting held on the campus of Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.

Happy 7th Mary (soundfile) was performed on March 17, 2004 at the Sonic Electronic concert at Louisiana Tech University.

On March 12, 2004, Dr. Alan Goldspiel and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs performed Petite Suite for Two (clarinet and guitar) at the CMS-South-Central Chapter Meeting which was held at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR.

Dr. Jeff Parker, Mandy Hooter and Mary Jo Parker performed Two Bryant Songs (tenor, clarinet and piano); and Justin Bruner (euphonium) and Keith Sanders (tuba) performed Three Historical Duet for Euphonium & Tuba in Treen Auditorium at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, LA on the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium Concert #18 on February 27, 2004.

I performed Into the Storm (unaccompanied tuba)and Infamy... (tuba and soundfile) on February 26, 2004 in Baton Rouge, LA at the NACUSA concert.

On February 19, 2004, Dr. Alan Goldspiel and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs performed Petite Suite for Two (clarinet and guitar) at the CMS-Southern Chapter Meeting in Hattiesburg, MS.  The conference was hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi.

Justin Bruner (euphonium) and Keith Sanders (tuba) performed Three Duet for Euphonium & Tuba on February 18, 2004 on the student recital hour.

I performed Infamy... (tuba and soundfile) on the Faculty Concert Series at Louisiana Tech University on Tuesday, February 16, 2004 in Howard Auditorium.

On November 6, 2003 the Anton Nel Trio performed my Two Bryant Songs, November and Song (These Prairie Glow with Flowers) (soprano, clarinet and piano), in the Irons Recital Hall on the University of Texas at Arlington.

On October 30, 2003 the Anton Nel Trio performed my Two Bryant Songs, November and Song (These Prairie Glow with Flowers) (soprano, clarinet and piano), in the Irons Recital Hall on the University of Texas at Arlington.

I performed Into the Storm (unaccompanied tuba) on the faculty concert series at Louisiana Tech University on October 21, 2003.

Dr. Richard Perry performed Tragic Suite (unaccompanied tuba) on a faculty recital at the University of Southern Mississippi on October 13, 2003 in Hattiesburg, MS.

I performed the world premiere of Into the Storm (unaccompanied tuba) at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, LA on the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium Concert #17 on October 10, 2003.

Dr. Kevin Chiarizzio performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone) on a on a faculty recital at Baylor University on October 7, 2003 in Waco, TX.

2002-2003

The South Central Chapter of NACUSA presented String Trio on May 28, 2003 in Baton Rouge, LA

On May 18, 2003, Petite Suite for Two will be performed by Dr. Alan Goldspiel and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs at City Stages 2003  (Birmingham’s World-Class Festival). The recital will be held at the New Arts Stage at the Birmingham Museum of Art - Steiner Auditorium.

The Louisiana Tech University Chamber Singers performed the world premier of Blue Jay Sing a Tune (SATB chorus & piano- Text by L. B. Morgan) on May 6, 2003, 7:30, at their Spring Concert which was held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, LA. Dr. Jeff Parker conducted.

On May 1, 2003, my Two Bryant Songs (were performed on the Phi Mu Alpha/ Sigma Alpha Iota Musicale.  The concert was held in the Large Hall of the Band Building at Louisiana Tech.  Dr. Jeff Parker sang and Mary Jo Parker, piano and Mandy Hooter, clarinet, accompanied.

The world premiere of Petite Suite for Two (Bb clarinet & guitar) was on April 29, 2003 at the Louisiana Tech, Liberal Arts Research Symposium in Ruston, LA  Mr. Lawrence Gibbs, clarinet, and Dr. Alan Goldspiel, guitar, were the performers.

On April 26, 2003 the Monroe Symphony Orchestra presented the world premiere of Louisiana Blue (Baritone, Flute, Piano and Chamber Orchestra - Text by L. B. Morgan), a composition which the Orchestra commissioned for their annual Lagniappe Concert.  The concert was held at the Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe, LA.  Dr. Alan Goldspiel conducted and the soloists included Dr. Sandra Lunte on flute, Dr. Richard Seiler on piano and Mr.Corey Trahan sang baritione.

Dr. Steele Moegle and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs performed Epigrams (Bb Clarinet and Piano) at the Region VI Conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. meeting which was held on February 14, 2003 at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

On February 14, 2003, Dr. Jeff Parker, along with Mary Jo Parker, performed Drowned (baritone and piano) at the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium Concert held at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches.  Dr. Parker also performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone).

Happy 7th Mary (Soundfile) was performed on February 11, 2003 at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance's Valentine's Harbinger - A Program of Love Songs.  The concert was held at the WorkPlay Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama.
 

Louisiana Tech University hosted the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium Concert on February 2, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall in Howard Center.  Dr. Jeff Parker, along with Mary Jo Parker, performed Drowned (baritone and piano).  Dr. Parker also performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone).   Dr. Steele Moegle and Mr. Lawrence Gibbs played Epigrams (Bb Clarinet and Piano);

The Birmingham Art Music Alliance presented Sonarequasta (flute, viola, Bb clarinet and piano) on May 19, 2002 at City Stages 2002 - Birmingham's World-Class Music Festival.
The Louisiana Tech University Chamber Singers performed part of An English Requiem on their May 14, 2002, Spring concert.  The concert will be at 7:30 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, LA. Dr. Jeff Parker was the conductor.
The Louisiana Tech University Concert Band present the world premiere of Ada Suite on it's May 4, 2002 concert.  The concert was at 3:30 pm and held in Howard Auditorium on the Louisiana Tech campus. Ms. Sheri Robken was the conductor.
Dr. Alexander played Infamy... (tuba and computer music on CD) and Happy 7th Mary (computer music on CD) on April 27, 2002 at the Louisiana Composers’ Consortium Concert #12.  The concert was held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Greg Luscombe performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone) on a Guest Recital at Louisiana Tech University on April 25, 2002.
The Birmingham Art Music Alliance presented the world premiere of Drowned (baritone and piano) on April 16, 2002 at 7:30 at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.  Dewin Tibbs was the singer and Chris Griffin played piano.
Dr. Alexander performed Infamy... (tuba and computer music on CD) on Louisiana Tech University’s Liberal Arts Research Symposium on April 15, 2002 in Wyly Auditorium.
Dr. Alexander performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) (unaccompanied tuba) on Concert #11 of the Louisiana Composers Consortium, on March 10, 2002 at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Greg Luscombe performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone) on March 1, 2002, at the Friday, 8 PM concert of the College Music Society-South Conference meeting held at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
Greg Luscombe performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone) on February 27, 2002 on the Music Faculty in Concert at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Birmingham Art Music Alliance presented Affinities Remembered (flute, oboe and Bb clarinet) on February 25, 2002 at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. The performers were Lisa Wienhold, flute; James Sullivan, oboe; and Dr. Lori Neprud-Ardovino, clarinet.
The Louisiana Tech University Chamber Singers performed the Kyrie section of An English Requiem on their February 24, 2002 Winter concert.  Dr. Jeff Parker was the conductor.
The world premiere of Happy 7th Mary (computer music on CD) was on February 16, 2002 at the Southeastern Composers League's annual meeting at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
Two Tuba Duets were played by Joseph Griffin & Matthew Smith on euphoniums on February 7, 2002 on the Student Recital at Louisiana Tech University.
The Louisiana Tech University SymphonicWind Ensemble performed Sun Over the Massanutten on February 1, 2002 at their annual Ark La Tex Band Conference.  Mr. Jim Robken was the conductor.
Two Tuba Duets [Joseph Griffin & Matthew Smith, euphoniums], Double Talk (for Bb clarinet and alto sax) [Chris O’Rear, alto sax & Mandy Hooter, Bb clarinet], and Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) (unaccompanied tuba) [Tracy Bedgood] were performed on the Phi Mu Alpha American Musicale on January 28, 2002.
The Louisiana Tech University Chamber Singers performed the Kyrie section of An English Requiem on their winter concert tour on January 25, 2002 at El Dorado High School in El Dorado, Arkansas & on January 27, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church in Monticello, Arkansas.  Dr. Jeff Parker was the conductor.
Greg Luscombe performed Oh! My Phoebes (unaccompanied trombone) on January 10, 2002 at Arkansas State University.
The Louisiana Tech University Chamber Orchestra performed the world premiere of Flight of Sorrow on Sunday, December 9, 2001.  Dr. Alan Goldspiel was the conductor.
The Louisiana Tech University's Low Brass Ensemble performed Playtime (3 euphoniums & 3 tubas) on Thursday, November 8, 2001 on the Student Recital.  The concert was held in Louisiana Tech University's Band Hall.  Dr. Alan Goldspiel was the guest conductor.
Dr. Alexander performed Infamy... (tuba and computer music on CD) on Monday, November 5, 2001 at 7:30.  It was played on the Faculty Concert Series at Louisiana Tech University's Howard Concert Hall.
Fall 2001, Dr. Alexander was appointed Assistant Professor of Music (Low Brass, Theory and Composition) at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana.


 

2000-2001


Dr. Alexander performed Dialogue #1 (flute and tuba) with flutist, Tammi Powell, at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance's summer concert held at Pilgrim Congregational Church on August 3, 2001.


James Michael Dunn performed It’s About Damn Time (tuba and computer music on CD) in June 2001 in Quito, Ecuador while on tour with members of the Tuscaloosa Symphony.


On May 24, 2001, Dr. Alexander presented a duo recital with fellow University of Alabama at Birmingham faculty member, flutist, Tammi Powel.  He performed Five Movements for Tuba (Or Something Like That) (unaccompanied tuba) as well as premiere a new work, Dialogue #1, for flute and tuba on the concert.


The Alabama Tuba Quartet performed Sonare Praeludium (2 euphoniums & 2 tubas) at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on May 14, 2001.


Beat! Beat! Drums! (mezzo-soprano, cello & tuba) was performed by Monica Zerbe (mezzo-soprano), Craig Hultgren (cello) and James Michael Dunn (tuba) at the Southeastern Composers League's 50th Anniversary Conference held at the University of Alabama on April 7, 2001.


Dr. Alexander performed Infamy... (tuba and computer music on tape) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on February 9, 2001.


Craig Hultgren premiered Ce cE ceLLo (cello & computer music on CD) at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance's ElectroAcoustic concert held at Birmingham-Southern College on November 14, 2000.

It's About Damn Time (tuba & computer music on tape) was performed by Dr. Richard Perry at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance's summerconcert held at the Birmingham Museum of Art on July 23, 2000.


The Alabama Tuba Quartet performed Sonare Praeludium (2 euphoniums & 2 tubas) & Dr. Richard Perry performed It's About Damn Time (tuba & computer music on tape) at City Stages 2000 - Birmingham's World-Class Music Festival on June 18, 2000.

Dr. Kevin Chiarizzio performed Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone) at Morehead State University on February 23, 1999.


On February 23, 1999, Dr. Alexander presented a tuba recital at the University of Montevallo.  He was assisted by Laurie Middaugh, piano and Joseph Ardovino, trumpet.

Dr. Alexander performed Infamy... (computer music on tape and tuba) at the College Music Society's Southern Chapter meeting, hosted by the University of Central Florida on February 19, 1999.


Dr. Kevin Chiarizzio premièred Oh! My Phoebus (unaccompanied trombone) on February 15, 1999 at Tennessee Technological University.  The work was commissioned by Dr. Chiarizzio.


Jamey Mitchell performed Tragic Suite (unaccompanied tuba) at the SCI Region IV conference meeting which was held on November 6 at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia.


Infamy... (computer music on tape and tuba) was performed by the tuba player of the Virginia Symphony at the SCI Region III conference meeting held on October 31 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.


Dr. Richard Perry premièred the song Beat!, Beat!, Drum! on October 27, at the University of Montevallo. The song is a setting of Walt Whitman's poem of the same name and has the instrumentation of soprano, cello and tuba.


On October 13, Dr. Alexander presented a recital of his music at the LeBaron Theater at the University of Montevallo.

1997-98


Recent performances include Infamy... (Mike Dunn, tuba) at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance's first concert of the season which was held at Samford University on October 7, 1997.


Affinities Remembered (Donnie Ashworth, flute; Julie Austin, oboe and Lori Neprud-Ardivino, clarinet) and Tragic Suite (Richard Perry, tuba) were performed at the University of Montevallo Contemporary Music Ensemble concert on November 3, 1997.


Jacqueline Leary-Warsaw, soprano; Lori Neprud-Ardivino, clarinet; and Laurie Middaugh, piano; performed my Two Bryant Songs, November and Song (These Prairie Glow with Flowers),at the Artburst/Birmingham Art Music Alliance concert which was held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham on January 20, 1998.  The trio repeated the two songs the following Friday at the University of Montevallo.


Richard Perry played Tragic Suite at the Southern chapter meeting of CMS which was held at The State University of West Georgia on February 27, 1998.
